Social media network Facebook is buying FriendFeed, a web service that gives users a view of what their friends are doing on all sorts of social media sites, including Facebook’s rivals.

According to FriendFeed co-founder Bret Taylor, the two social media giants will eventually merge, though FriendFeed will operate separately for now. He also added that FriendFeed was drawn to Facebook’s much larger base of 250 million users.
It’s still not clear what Facebook’s plans for FriendFeed, whose services centers around the idea of aggregating information from other online media sites like Twitter, Yelp and Flickr.
An analyst said that the FriendFeed acquisition by Facebook should help open up its site and boost features that show users more information in real time.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
